Work Overview
My friend David Cox commissioned me to compose settings of two of his favourite poems, 'Ozymandias' by Percy Bysshe Shelley and 'Sonnet 29 (When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes)' by William Shakespeare. David subsequently premiered both of these works at Flinders Street Baptist Church lunchtime concerts in 2017 and 2018.
These lyrical settings aim to convey the story and meaning behind the words, which is a common aim of mine in text setting, but even more important when the commissioner and performer has entrusted you to bring to life their favourite poems. Ozymandias is justifiably rather grandiose and expansive, while I Think On Thee is introspective and tender.
