Work Overview

'Snapshots of Love and Life' is a song cycle in 7 parts, conceived as a companion work to Robert Schumann's much-lauded Frauen-Liebe und Leben. The text by Anna Goldsworthy tells a story of a woman's life and love through a contemporary lens, with a relatable 21st-century heroine. The story here is different from the Chamisso text set by Schumann- we still hear of motherhood and romantic partnership, but the culmination of the relationship comes through separation rather than death, and rather than finishing in despair, the cycle concludes with bittersweet redemption and ultimately hope.
