Work Overview

Way out was commissioned by the London Mandolin Orchestra in 2012. The title is slightly ambiguous - an event could be described as ' way out', for example. The composer sees this music as being descriptive of much of the landscape in New South Wales, Australia - especially the landscape which we think of as way out west…where the horizon and the landscape seem endless and the roads are called gun-barrel highways. Australia is the driest continent in the world and with a population density of 6.4 people per square mile (second lowest in the world and most of it centred in the major cities) much of Australia can be regarded as Outback. The
unique character of the outback has been made famous by Aboriginal and European artists.
I hope that my music can also evoke some of the scenes to be found way out west.
