Work Overview
Trois Leçons was composed in 1972 for Australian soprano
Marilyn Richardson and harpsichordist Robert Goode. The three
songs received their premier performance at the Musica Viva
Australia festival in Geelong, Victoria, in 1974 and subsequently
they were included in the touring program of the Consort of
Sydney and performed many times in Australia and Europe.
The words are taken from the arcys life of mehitabel poems of Don
Marquis and are about an insect's view of the world. Archy is a
small cockroach who sits at the typewriter by night, punching out
his thoughts with some difficulty. He is not strong enough to do
capitals or punctuation. Mehitabel is his friend, the cat.
The words of these poems appealed to me immensely because of
their wit, their unique view of life on this earth and because of
their universal nature. They are words which cause one to think
differently about life in general. I had the interesting task of
trying to interpret these novel ideas in music. Whatever the
result, I had great fun writing the songs.
