Product details
Una melodía para Ramón or 'A Melody for Raymond' was especially composed for Australian pianist Raymond Shon as part of the '20 Variations on the Quadruply Riddled King's Theme by 20 Composers' project, and is dedicated to American physicists Stefan Hollos and J. Richard Hollos (Longmont, Colorado, USA). The work explores the musical implications of combinatoriality as an organizational determinant, as well as algorithmic composition, or 'automated composition' as a method for music composition, in reference to "the process of using some formal process to make music with minimal human intervention." 'Una melodía para Ramón' adopts an algorithmic approach to music composition in the form of 'probabilistic automata' and the combinatorial generation of 'unrestricted rhythms' - the methodology eloquently presented by American physicists Stefan Hollos and J. Richard Hollos in 'Creating Melodies'' (2018) and 'Creating Rhythms' (2014) within the context of a regular language, "defined in terms of an automaton which is simply a set of states and rules for moving between the states."
Among the historical thematic materials featured
in Una melodía para Ramón is the 'Thema Regium' (Theme
of the King) by King Frederick II (1712-1786), or Frederick the
Great, especially selected by Raymond Shon for the project
because of its association with 'coronavirus' (corona = crown) -
in direct reference to the current Coronavirus Covid-19 global
pandemic "affecting 213 countries and territories around the
world and 2 international conveyances," which as of August 10 has
accumulated 20,007,804 reported cases (including 12,886,491
recoveries) and 733,329 deaths. The 'Thema Regium' was utilized
by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) in his work 'The Musical
Offering (Musikalisches Opfer or Das Musikalische Opfer)', BWV
1079 (1747), which he inscribed as 'Regis Iussu Cantio Et Reliqua
Canonica Arte Resoluta' (the theme given by the king, with
additions, resolved in the canonic style). Other materials,
juxtaposed in the work with the 'Thema Regium' as part of the
left-hand accompaniment include the subject from The Art of Fugue
(Die Kunst der Fuge), BWV 1080 (1742-46, Rev. 1948-50); bass line
from Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582 (c. 1706-1713);
Dieterich Buxtehude's (1637-1707) four-bar ostinato pattern from
Passacaglia in D minor, BuxWV 161 (c. 1668-1707); as well as the
Aria bass line (opening) from The 'Goldberg' Variations, BWV 988
(1741). The first four notes of the work additionally highlights
the BACH motif (B", A, C, and B' - a musical cryptogram forming
Johann Sebastian Bach's family name), which Bach notably utilized
as a fugue subject in the 4-voice triple fugue Fuga a 3 Soggetti
(Contrapunctus XIV) of The Art of Fugue (Die Kunst der Fuge), BWV
1080 (1742-46, Rev. 1948-50). Interesting to note is that in 300
Jahre Johann Sebastian Bach (300 years of Johann Sebastian Bach)
German musicologist Ulrich Prinz lists "409 works by 330
composers from the 17th to the 20th century using the BACH
motif."
The algorithmic melodic
development of the complete collection of thematic materials
relies on the establishment of second order approximations that
take all note transition probabilities into account. For its
rhythm, the work adopts the combinatorial strategy of
'Single-State Probabilistic Automatons,' or "unrestricted
compositions of the integer n into m parts": in other words all possible compositions of n
= 9 and m = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or all 9 pulse rhythms with
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 onsets.
