Product details

'Un verso infantil para Juan' or 'A Nursery Rhyme for John' was especially composed for Ensemble Décadanse (Lunel, France) as a Homenaje a John Cage (1912-1992) - in celebration of the 99th anniversary of his birth. The melodic elements of Humpty Dumpty - the English language nursery rhyme of nineteenth-century English origin; first published in London in 1810 by Harding and Wright in a version of Gammer Gurton's Garland, or, The Nursery Parnassus: A Collection of Pretty Songs and Verses for the Amusement of all Little Good Children who can neither Read nor Run - feature in the work, which are incorporated via a compositional process structured around probability theory utilizing first-order Markov chain techniques, as well as metrical ambiguity generated via the simultaneous incorporation of 6/4 compound duple and 3/2 simple triple time signatures. The stochastic methodology involves the separate generation of six unique variations of both the melodic and rhythmic shape of Humpty Dumpty, utilizing a first-order Markov chain two-stage process that establishes both a 'transition event order' and 'normalized probability distribution' for each of the 8 bars of the original composition in order to then apply an 'objective process' for the actual creation of melodic materials.
