THE GOLEM by Larry Sitsky
Libretto by Gwen Harwood
The Golem is a monumental achievement by the Australian composer,
Larry Sitsky. Comprising three Acts, lasting almost three hours
and utilising enormous forces both chorally and orchestrally,
this live recording was made during the work's historic premiere
season.
The evocative story of The Golem takes place in 16th century
Prague where the Jews are being persecuted by the Christians.
Influenced by the claim of sorcerers, that it would be possible
for the righteous to create a force that would destroy their
enemies, the Rabbi dreams of creating a Golem to destroy the
enemies of Israel. This he does, creating a Golem from the earth,
with dire consequences. This dark tale gave director, Barrie
Kosky, more than ample material to create an amazing set of mud
and magical effects. Some of the set noises can be heard on the
recording adding to the eerie, but compelling atmosphere of the
work as does Larry Sitsky's remarkable setting of the libretto of
Australian poet, Gwen Harwood.
