Product details

This piece, written for an ensemble of lower strings, was inspired by the intricate patterns of silk weaving from the hill tribes of northern Thailand and the way the patterns in the cloth are like patterns found in nature itself. Stories for Ocean Shells (2000) is built upon a recurring cyclical pattern reminiscent of a seashell spiraling around itself, progressively expanding and contracting in circular, rhythmic formations. The intricate tapestry of notes iterates the basic building blocks that form the architectural foundation reminiscent of the structure of a shell. This is outlined by the proportion of the piece, prominently marked by the progression from a dominant harmonic field to the tonic.
