Product details

... This is part of a larger cycle of work that draws inspiration from my country of birth Bahrain, and by extension, Babylonian, Sumerian and Persian mythological associations from the surrounding regions.

The subtitle of the work comes from a translation of the Babylonian account of Ishtar, goddess of sexuality, life and war, who descends into theunderworld. Ishtar passes through seven doorways, and at each point the gatekeeper removes her clothes and symbols of her divinity. Naked and bare, she comes face to face with Erishkigal, the goddess of death, who unleashes 'sixty diseases' upon her. Without Ishtar, all sexual activity ceases on earth. This prompts Ea (king of the gods) to create the beautiful Asushunamir, who tricks Erishkigal into reviving Ishtar with the waters of life, and allowing her release. The ending is somewhat ambiguous. Perhaps she is also released with her beloved Tammuz, but texts on her Sumerian counterpart, Inanna, reveal that Tammuz (Dumuzid) was instead consigned to theunderworldto allow Ishtar/Inanna's release.
