Product details
The genesis for this short work came from a walk through the City of Melbourne at different times on the one day. Its hard not to notice the increasing number of homeless people living on the streets in the city centre. What struck me during this particular journey was the quiet attitude of these citizens - each maintaining a position of "silence" as it were, with their personal stories being told through the medium of signs and placards.
Many of these signs contain similar turns of phrase, and a few of these have formed the basis for the text of this piece. One day, five silences is a collection of five "silences" that can each be performed individually or in sequence. The overall feeling in performance should be of tenderness and compassion. This music is not intended to speak "for" the homeless (I believe that people can speak for themselves). Rather, it is a singing back to them.
