Meridian : for wind quintet / Harry Sdraulig.
by Harry Sdraulig (2021)
The title, Meridian, has some connotations in relation to the musical content of the piece. In geography, the term 'meridian' refers to a circle of constant longitude passing through a given place on the earth's surface and the terrestrial (north and south) poles. Musically, the work focuses on the concept of a central pitch or musical line (analogous to the line of a meridian) fanned by circular musical motives which expand and fold in on one another, to varying degrees of symmetry. This, in turn, is reflected through extensive use of contrary motion in harmonic progressions. The overall structure of the piece is also cyclical: refrains of the opening melody are interspersed with fast and lively interludes.
