Product details
On Wednesday, 13th March, 1996, sixteen children, all 5 years old, were shot and killed at a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland. Their teacher was also killed. Eleven more children and two other teachers were shot and injured.
The text of Lament for Dumblane is a response to this tragedy although it refers to it only obliquely.
The music spins out a long line of lamentation, divided between antiphonal sopranos. I was aiming to explore the expressive potential of using quite strict limitations: deploying a few notes at a time, twisting and turning in such a way as to keep a sense of momentum. The tenor and bass parts underpin the line, using the bleak intervals of 4th & 5ths particularly at cadence points, but they also unsettle the line with uneasy independent movement.
