Product details
Lagu Lagu Manis (Sweet Melodies), was written for the cellist, Gary Williams. It is influenced by sweet melodies I heard and loved in Java and Bali and also by the words of my mentor, Balinese musician Cokorde Agung Mas: 'the music must enter the hearts and minds of the musicians'. The work is tonally based on the pelog scale and begins with an extended section for solo cello. The piano enters, also with a short solo, and the work draws to a conclusion with a dialogue between the two instruments.
In 1994, I went on to create an orchestral tone poem based on this work for cello and piano. The orchestral work, Lagu Lagu Manis 2 (1994), was recorded in performance by the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra, Bulgaria, conducted by Tsanko Delibozov.
