Product details

A kōan is a paradoxical statement or ambiguous riddle used by certain Zen practitioners to aid meditation and bypass normal intellectual thought processes. My series of works with this title are reflections upon self-constructed, enigmatic, musical kōans that provide stimulus in the compositional process.

Kōan III is a kind of abstract "dramatic scene" that enacts the activity of the rational mind and its meditative settling and distillation. The music unfolds through a series of duo, trio and quartet combinations-all forms of duality-before a moment of realisation, unity and self-awareness, or kenshō (at the final section 13), is eventually achieved.

Kōan III was commissioned by the OzAsia Festival 2011. It was first performed by Akikazu Nakamura, Natsuko Yoshimoto, Bernadette Harvey and Claire Edwardes at the Adelaide Festival Centre on 13 September 2011.
