Product details

Jericho's Strange in its original form was premiered by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sir William Southgate (Brisbane 1995).

Given that chances to write for large orchestra were & remain uncommon, the commission for the National Orchestral Composers' School provided a significant opportunity to explore orchestral colours & textures, albeit within the limitations of a ten-minute work.

Although Jericho's Strange ultimately led to the commission (by Symphony Australia for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra) and premiere of 'Eirenicon' (WASO conducted by Kenneth Young, Perth 2000) it had always been my intention to revisit the score making room for the preferred but initially unavailable piano. After several false starts this 2022 version finally materialised.

Jericho's Strange is not a programmatic piece, but lyrics by English songwriter Peter Hammill, together with the realities of life in Melbourne in the mid-1990s, suggested imagery that doubtless found its way into the piece as it progressed.

"…Jericho's strange,

throbbing with life at its heart:

people are drawn together,

simultaneously torn apart…"

from 'MODERN', by Peter Hammill.
