Product details

The first thing I noticed when I moved from my home of Brisbane to London wasn't the weather; it wasn't the grey skies or the dull cold air; it wasn't the traffic or the narrower streets; it wasn't the lively busyness of the place, its sleeplessness, its vibrancy.

The first thing I noticed when I moved from my home of Brisbane to London was the sound.

Outside: traffic, noise, the lively busyness, sleeplessness, vibrancy.

Inside: nothing, a strange eerie silence, even with the window open which lead out to the internal courtyard of my apartment building, barely anything.

At home, there was the distant motorway, a plane flying over, nearby someone mowing the lawn, the gentle hum of an air-conditioning unit or pool filter, the neighbours' children playing in their yard, a dog barking playfully (or maybe not so playfully) at a deliveryman, the delicate rustle of the palm trees in our backyard as they bend in the breeze, the mellow tones of a set of wooden chimes hanging in our bottlebrush tree, and of course, the birds, so many birds of all varieties, the bight squawking of the rainbow lorikeets as they feed in amongst the native bushes, the gang magpies that meet to chat under our pergola most afternoons, the cackling of the kookaburras at the crack of dawn.

I missed the sound.

"Glenro" was the name of our ancestral family home in India, the house where my mother, her parents, and most of my family grew up. We named our home in Brisbane, the new family home, "Glenro" as well. This is a sort of musical postcard of that home.
