Product details

This disc from Concordia Mandolin and Guitar Ensemble draws on the more virtuosic, lively and passionate items in the repertoire of the ensemble. The idea of flight is evoked in the choice of many of the pieces, notably "The flight of the bumble bee" and "The witches". All the other pieces in one way or another echo, with their energy and vitality, the rapture of flights of fancy.

The compositions span more than four centuries, ranging from the Baroque period (Vivaldi), through the Classical period (Mateo Albeniz), the Romantic period (Paganini and Rimsky-Korsakov) to the twentieth century. Two composers who have made significant contributions to compositions of music for mandolin orchestra are Konrad Wolki (1904-1983) and Herman Ambrosius (1897-1983). Rhythmic interest is provided by the displacement of accents and changing metres in the works of Peter Hoch (b.1937) and Ralph Paulsen (b.1954). The 20th century composer Francois Menichetti may not be know outside the mandolin fraternity, but Hadjidakis' "Never on Sunday" is a popular piece, and well-suited to the orchestra.

Solo mandolin: Kurt Jensen
Solo Accordion: Juliette Maxwell
