Product details
The phrase Et in Arcadia ego (I too was in Arcadia) is a recurrent motif and title in visual art; it refers to the omnipresence of mortality in the midst of life, even at its most carefree. Much of the wind quintet repertoire is light and playful in character, and consists of miniatures, whether individual or in sets. My intention in this work, however, was to create something more weighty and on a larger scale. Its single 16-minute movement explores a variety of textures and colours, including woodwind doublings, and various subsets of the ensemble. Starting in subdued and melancholic mood, it traces out a single arc of accumulating tension and energy, relaxing only right towards the end.
