Product details

In 2014, Dextre was chosen by the piano duo, 'Piano Pinnacle' to be performed in a concert with the theme 'Canada'. Dextre is the name of one of Canada's contributions to the International Space Station (ISS). It is a robotic handyman, or 'Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator' that performs maintenance and repairs, and reduces the need for dangerous space walks. In this piece, the two pianos represent Dextre and the ISS. Dextre approaches the ISS, they lock together, then Dextre withdraws, each now in a different configuration. Each piano part has two materials. One material consists of a short, loud octave segment, (different for each piano part), and the other is a soft, rhythmic background material. The form of the piece is such that each piano's octave motifs alternate, getting closer and closer in time, until they interlock at about two thirds of the way through. Following this, the octave motifs, somewhat fragmented now, move apart again.
