Product details
Cognatus is a Latin term denoting that which is of the same origin or ancestry. All three movements in this piece share the same three thematic ideas and utilise the same scale (a symmetrical and rather dark sounding eight-note mode). Furthermore, they all have the same fast tempo (Allegro) and metre (4/4); they even open with the same chordal progression.
Whilst remaining within these unifying and essentially self-limiting parameters, I have endeavoured to maximise contrast by exploring the different potentials that lie within the initial themes. Although the movements have the same point of departure, they immediately diverge in their developments, taking excursions into distinctly contrasting musical territories. Each movement thus offers a different 'take' on the same thematic material and is imbued with its own musical character.
