Product details
In writing my first solo percussion pieces I was faced with three
simple tasks:
choosing the colours, rhythms and pitches, organising these
elements, and achieving the greatest possible clarity. For they
rhythms I chose a dance in 6/8 (a tribute to Sicialiano in
Lachenmann's Tanzsuite; for the colours I chose a very limited
instrumentation which nevertherless allows fir varuious degrees
of contrast and
as far as pitch is concerned, I preferred very low sounds
(timpani) and etremely high ones (crotales), this having a
certain dramatic purpose; when the crotales enter, their material
is almost 12-tone.
To my surprize, one of the instruments I selected was the vibraphone. I remember saying during my first meeting with Daryl Pratt that I felt allergic towards this instrument; he replied that for hi it was a very special instrument, and later proved this in an extraordinary session that changed my whole attitude to its SOUND WORLD. To be sure this is no vibraphone solo, but the instrument plays a central role in CLIP.
