From libretto "Yes, you're right, that's me. Calypso, the most beautiful Of the many daughters of the conceited Lord of Atlantis. Oh yes, conceited. He has renamed our great mountain after himself, Mount Atlas. Well, much good my beauty has done me. My father banished me from Atlantis. He accused me and my friends of riotous living And of debauching the populace! Well, I must admit we have a fondness for sailors. But then, Atlantis is overrun by sailors! Sailors from all over the world! And you know what sailors are … So now, With my sisters in the craft now we are merely cave dwellers On this dismal mountainous island, On this island they call Ogygia. Banished from Atlantis! By five thousand stades of ocean Infested with annoying sea monsters!" Then, unexpectedly, sailors visited, and I fell in love … "Yes, I admit it. His name was Ulysses! We were together! But then he sailed off, who knows, back to my sister, Circe, On her island - Which is less well kept than mine. If so then he's still there! She encourages all her visitors to remain And make pigs of themselves! Including Ulysses, no doubt! Oh, how I loved him."
