Product details
Ariel is based upon a poem by Sylvia Plath. The music aims to explore the richness, violence and power of the experience of the as yet unborn human travelling towards life on earth. The disparate texture of timpani and piano create an expressive antipathy, one that aims to be a propelling motion that represents the necessity for action and movement that is a part of this remarkable time.
I imagined the timpani to be a kind of guardian of the cosmos, summoning a child to their awaiting life. The piano takes the role of the child who has no choice but to undertake this journey as all is in motion.
It is also an image of transformative experience.
Ariel was commissioned by Australian pianist Danae Killian as part of a series of works based on Sylvia Plath's poems. It was selected for the 1999 ISCM World Music Days Festival, Romania.
