Product details
Another Look at Autumn, for solo piano, was written in New York while I was studying composition with David Del Tredici. It was written in the Fall of 1992, a time of rich autumnal colours and foggy mornings, and from the vantage point of my view across Riverside Park and the Hudson River.
I had heard the American composer, John Adams, describe himself as a bored minimalist and I identified with that. You can hear it in this piece and you can hear the influence too of David Del Tredici's hyper-romantic musical language in the central section of what is a simple three-part structure. The outer two sections employ harmonic practice in the romantic tradition but here fused with ostinati which are aligned with the processes of the American minimalist movement in music which manifested itself in the music of Glass, Reich and Adams.
I orchestrated this piece for small orchestra some time later and called it Angel's Flight. In this iteration, it has been performed many times by various Australian orchestras including the Tasmanian and Queensland Symphony Orchestras.
