Event Details
Works by Shostakovich, Vine and Barber.
Three composers from three different continents respond to an inner unease caused by their powerlessness to change circumstances in the outer world.
Barber’s ‘Dover Beach’ is an exquisite setting of the famous 1867 poem by Matthew Arnold. The turmoil expressed in the poem, which in turn refers to writing by Sophocles in the 5th century BC, is still keenly felt in our own 21st century. Indeed, perhaps that eternal note of sadness, and a troubled feeling of unease with the circumstances in which we find ourselves, is a universal human condition.
Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre and Quartz.
