STOP PRESS! There will be a pre-concert talk by Christopher Gordon in the Theatre at 2:15 pm

The National Capital Orchestra is proud to feature acclaimed pianist Katherine Day, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 ‘Emperor’. Conducted by Musical Director Leonard Weiss, you won’t want to miss this highlight of the NCO’s 2017 Concert Series!

Opening the program will be Nigel Sabin’s Symphony. Commissioned by the ABC, this gem of Australian composition will be heard for the first time in the Canberra region.

Following Sabin is the world premiere of a suite from the Australian TV series Moby Dick. Composed by award-winning Australian musician Christopher Gordon (Mao’s Last Dancer, Master and Commander) the score to Moby Dick encapsulates a stunning romantic feel for large orchestra, with prominent solos for French horns and bass trumpet, as well as elegant writing for the winds and strings. This will be your opportunity to be part of the incredible premiere performance of a work by one of Australia’s most well-known composers!

Concluding the program is Beethoven’s epic Piano Concerto No. 5 ‘Emperor’ with pianist Katherine Day. This is the most highly regarded of Beethoven’s concerti, designed to showcase the talent of a master pianist. Day delivers in every capacity. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, she has given acclaimed performances of Ravel’s Piano Concerto for Left Hand with Orchestra Victoria, has featured in tours with Opera Victoria and has studied with many of the world’s leading pianists throughout the UK, Europe, Russia, the USA and Australia.

Featured non-Australian music: Beethoven
