SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS Mingus Amongst Us ft. Tessie Overmyer & Hannah James

MINGUS AMONGST US ft. Tessie Overmyer & Hannah James

Charles Mingus brought fire and energy to the jazz world that had never been seen before! His compositions and the personnel in his bands were all thoroughly steeped in the swinging blues/jazz traditions, yet fiercely modern and Avant guard for their time. Sydney baritone saxophonist Steve Fitzmaurice has brought these compositions to life again with his arrangements of the Mingus repertoire for the 9 piece powerhouse ensemble ‘Mingus Amongst Us’.

'Mingus Amongst Us’ perfectly captures the raucous, fiery energy that Mingus and his compositions were famous for!

TESSIE OVERMYER:

Presented as part of the 2021 Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival, Tessie Overmyer is one of Sydney’s most exciting new jazz alto players. She’s performed on the world stage at just 17, playing the famous Newport Jazz Festival. Tessie leads her own quintet, and her writing focuses on strong melodies and good grooves, inspired by the compositional styles of Philip Dizack, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Christian Scott.

HANNAH JAMES:

Recipient of the Jann Rutherford Memorial Award 2011 for up and coming young female jazz musicians, Hannah James’ career has gone from strength to strength with performances at The Melbourne Jazz Festival, and Kinetic Jazz Festival. She’s worked alongside jazz icons Don Burrows, Dale barlow and John Morrison – and she now leads multiple ensembles.
