Event Details

This concert by one of Australia's best orchestras opens with a delightful collection of pieces originally written by Australia's master of musical landscape, Peter Sculthorpe, as film music in the 1960s. The concert also features the most popular violin concerto of the 20th century, written by a man who longed deeply to be a soloist. Sibelius said that, when he began learning the violin at the age of 14, it 'took me by storm, and...it was my dearest wish to become a great virtuoso'; that is, had he not been an exceedingly nervous performer, and had he not become distracted by the composition of Finlandia, The Swan of Tuonela and numerous other pieces that made him one of the most widely-performed composers of his day. The vistas of Sibelius' native Finland were to inspire much of his music, but the world's favourite piece of musical landscape is Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony. Whether it is the serene 'Scene by the Brook' or the drama of the thunderstorm, Beethoven's hymn to the glory of God's creation sings like no other symphonic work.

Featured non-Australian music: Sibelius, Beethoven
