Event Details
After a highly successful season last year, Melbourne Metropolitan Sinfonietta returns in 2016 with an adventurous program of four world premieres under the title, Midnight Songs.
Elliott Gyger, prolific and highly-regarded composer and senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne, will conduct a program including his own orchestration of Béla Bartók's adrenalin-pulsating piano works, 6 Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm. Two new works by young Australians will be Kampflieder by Liam Flenady and James Wade's Midnight Songs. Flenady is currently based in Brussels and is undertaking his PhD through the Queensland Conservatorium – Griffith University, while Wade, a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, has already established solid working relationships with many Australian and international performing groups.
Julian Yu, Beijing-born and based in Melbourne since 1985, is already well-known for his colourful and highly original compositions. For this concert he has gathered fragments of other works by leading 20th century composer Dmitri Shostakovich to create what Yu has mischievously titled Symphony No 16 by D. Shostakovich, a surprise for all this great Russian's fans!
