Event Details

Jian Wang first came to international attention as a diminutive child cellist in the 1970s documentary From Mao to Mozart. Since then his career has taken off around the globe. In 2006 he was part of an incredibly successful collaboration with Australian pianist Bernadette Harvey at the Huntington Estate Music Festival in Mudgee. Both performers remember it as a wonderful and easy partnership, and we are delighted to now extend the collaboration, sharing its excitement with a much wider audience.

‘Somehow, playing with Bernadette just brought out the best in me,’ says Jian. ‘It’s like having a great conversation with a friend who is not only able to listen, but also to make you think and to support your feelings – all these things.’

‘He has a gorgeous, beautiful sound,’ adds Bernadette, ‘and when he played the Bach suites at Huntington he just had everyone in the palm of his hand.’

The repertoire shows off the versatility and wide-ranging interests of the musicians. Alongside two Brahms sonatas – rightly acknowledged as core repertoire for this instrumental combination – there is also one by Schnittke. Jian describes it as ‘one of the greatest pieces of all time; so fantastic…it creates the maximum amount of emotions and is really one of my all-time favourite works.’

The programs also allow the solo talents of each performer to shine. Jian brings his unique perspective and captivating style to the beloved solo suites by Bach. Bernadette showcases her trademark virtuosity and imagination in Carl Vine’s legendary Sonata no 1 (perhaps the most-performed Australian work ever) and to the fingerbusting demands of Kevin Puts’s Alternating Current, which she calls ‘very exciting and thrilling
