Event Details

Presented by Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra Traverse through sounds of the world and the relationships we forge in this intimate recital with Camerata violinist Jason Tong and his wife Kirsten Tong on cello. Set among the wondrous surrounds of the Museum of Brisbane, Jason and Kirsten’s performance will explore the interconnectedness of music-making and how experiences and relationships manifest through musical collaboration. Opening with touches of Mongolian sounds, Lei Liang’s Gobi Canticle pushes the boundaries of the violin and cello in this expressive piece. We then experience the captivating rawness of Jessie Montgomery’s Duo for violin and cello in a dynamism that elicits “laughter, compassion, adventure, and sometimes silliness”. In a brand-new composition, written especially for Jason and Kirsten, Betty Beath’s A table for two – A suite for violin and cello bounces between the instruments in a light-hearted dialogue. We end with Zoltán Kodály’s fusion of traditional Hungarian folk music with classical string playing, where traditional melodic roles are exchanged, and both instruments must wholeheartedly rely on the other. A favourite with audiences in 2020 as part of “5@5 with Camerata”, we are excited to present Jason and Kirsten’s thrilling live performance this October.

Featured non-Australian music: Lei Liang "Gobi Canticle", Jessie Montgomery "Duo for violin and cello", Zoltán Kodály "Duo for violin and cello" (op. 7),
