Event Details

The Goldner String Quartet has widespread and long-standing recognition for excellence, as not only Australia’s pre-eminent string quartet, but as an ensemble of international significance, to be compared with the very best in the world. The Goldner String Quartet is comprised of Dene Olding (violin), Dimity Hall (violin), Irina Morozova (viola) and Julian Smiles (cello).

For this Four Winds Festival program the quartet has chosen pieces around themes of reconnection: celebration, compassion, reflection. At the heart of the program, Beethoven’s ‘Heiliger Dankgesang’, the astonishing slow movement from his Quartet Op.132 written after his recovery from a long illness, is inscribed as a ‘Holy song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian mode’. Peteris Vasks’ spiritual and evocative music, whilst rooted in Latvia’s traditional folk music, explores broad themes of faith, struggle, compassion, and the natural environment.

Australian composers Ross Edwards and Matthew Hindson frame this seemingly eclectic program with rousing energy and optimism, but all four works represent their composer’s connection to and expression of the human condition.

Repertoire:

Ross Edwards - White Cockatoo Spirit Dance
Peteris Vasks - String Quartet No.3
Beethoven - Heiliger Dankgesang from Quartet Op.132
Matthew Hindson - String Quartet No.5 Celebration

Featured non-Australian music: Peteris Vasks, Beethoven
