Event Details
Flinders Quartet continues its scintillating performances for 2013 with a string quartet program that reflects on the rich history of chamber music influenced by folk themes. Of special interest is the premiere of a new work by much loved Australian composer, Elena Kats-Chernin. Beethoven, Kats-Chernin and Bartók have all used folk themes as inspiration for music that stirs the soul and gives voice to national pride. In his towering quartet Op. 59 No. 1, Beethoven uses a Russian theme to pay tribute to the Ambassador Count Razumovsky, while Bartók remains more earth-bound for his Rumanian Folk Dances. These two works cradle a new creation by Kats-Chernin, inspired by the family and musical memories of artist and photographer, Joyce Evans.
Featured non-Australian music: Bartók, Beethoven.
