Event Details

Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as ‘“A local treasure, Elsen Price is a double bassist who ranges across classical, avant-garde, jazz, Middle Eastern, free improvisation and more, and is utterly convincing in every context.’ And Cutcommon Magazine as ‘Elsen’s playing here is stylish, suave and seductive as lyrical lines twist and turn throughout, unfolding with striking urgency.”

The new album release ‘The Life Long Day Dreamer’ was recorded at the start of the Covid 19 pandemic for a live stream performance in Sydney. The album is unique as Elsen plays both Electric Bass and Double Bass, instead of his previous 4 albums of solo double bass. The work a continual 2 hour improvised performance with constant changes between instruments in a broad sound landscape.

The music itself is a surreal exploration into the imagination, depicting a colourful journey with various themes and characters portrayed by melodies and textures in the music. Elsen isn’t a stranger to long form improvisation, with live performances exceeding 3 hours at Tasmania’s MONA and music festivals at the Rocks in Sydney in recent years, to formative performances in 2012 ranging from 4-8 hours.

Elsen’s career has varied since committing himself to solo and new art in 2012, with performances alongside Josh Groban (US), Lee Ranaldo (US), Mike Patton (US), Sharam Nazeri (Iran), Alireza Ghourbani (Iran) and Adnan Karim (Iraq), to performing throughout Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Czech Republic, England and Scotland. Local collaborations include performances with celebrated composer performer Keyna Wilkins, The Marais Project, Ensemble Offspring, Mashas Legacy, Occupied France and multiple collaborations with both Local and International Artists in Australia and overseas.
‘The Life Long Day Dreamer’ will be released through Sydney music label Earshift Records.

Vermillion Trio:

Vermillion Trio is an all female trio centring on experimental and improvised music, combining modern electronic elements with traditional acoustic sound. The three members, Alia Josephine on tenor saxophone, Julia Magri on double bass, and Lehra Karmazina on piano/synth focus on connection: the connection between eras of time, between each other as musicians of both modern and classical repertoire, and between the audience and the music. Flicking quickly between fast paced aggressive styles, atmospheric ambient landscapes and funky rhythmic feels is central to Vermillion’s musical ideology, acknowledging the listener’s ability to actively participate in fast changing sensory input in a globalised modern context.
