SIMA presents the Jazz:NOW Summer Festival featuring; Double Bill: Audrey Powne + Alex Hirlian Quintet

Melbourne’s queen of groove joins forces with a futuristic ensemble in a non-stop double-bill.

Melbourne’s Audrey Powne fuses traditional pop song-writing with elements of RnB, Hip Hop and the freedom of improvised music. Her intimate and warm vocals, spacey instrumental passages and silky smooth new-school jazz caught the attention of international jazz taste-maker Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio / WWFM).

In the inspirit of jazz and spontaneity, Alex Hirlian (2018 National Jazz Award) premieres his brand-new quintet in their first fiery performance promising skill, creativity and flair. Tonight is a preview of Alex’s new album to be released on ABC Jazz.

Trust the taste-makers and see what the fuss is about.

Audrey Powne: Trumpet/Vox
James Bowers: Keys
Myka Wallace: Drums
Tim Curnick: Bass

Michael Avgenicos – Saxophone
Josh Meader – Guitar
Matthew Thomson – Keys

SIMA would like to thank the City of Sydney, Create NSW, Live Music Australia and Australia Council for the arts for their generous funding towards the Jazz:NOW Summer Festival program.
