Event Details

A musical voyage across the seas from Scotland and Finland to Australia, by way of watery depths, epic journeys, maritime disasters, and island magic between. In music both ancient and new, Behold – the Sea! evokes the mystery and majesty of the ocean, and the courage and tenacity of those who venture out across its vast expanses.

From Jaakko Mäntyjärvi’s stirring tribute to the hundreds drowned in the 1994 sinking of the passenger ferry Estonia to Cecilia McDowall’s choral homage to Harriet Quimby, the first woman to fly across the English Channel in 1912, just a day after the sinking of the Titanic, and Peter Sculthorpe’s song tribute to James Cook’s commanding voyage to follow the transit of Venus, The Stars Turn.

Alice Eather, the young Maningrida teacher and activist who took her life last year, is remembered in a new work by well-known composer and singer Dan Walker, based on her poem 'Yúya Karrabúra' (Fire in Burning) - a heartfelt plea for understanding and reconciliation between two very different cultures, Australia’s original inhabitants and the Europeans and others who have been arriving since 1788.

The concert also draws on James MacMillan’s wonderful Strathclyde Motets, a Scottish region renowned for shipbuilding, as well as Nicolas Champion’s De profundis clamavi. From the depths to the stars, this expansive program concludes in peace with the last farewell to the departed, In paradisum by the Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds.

Featured non-Australian music: James MacMillan, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, Josquin des Prez, Richard Rodney Bennett, Cecilia McDowell
