The Australian Art Orchestra presents 1988 - a new work composed by Dung Nguyen and Peter Knight for the Australian Art Orchestra with visual design by Phuong Ngo.

Named after the year that Nguyen emigrated from South Vietnam to Australia, the performance fuses the sounds of Vietnamese folk music and contemporary jazz, creating an intertwining of personal narratives, diverse music practices, and moments of historical significance across a suite of 6 compositions that highlight the individual practices of the players in the ensemble.

1988 presents visual fragments from each of the lives of the performers in the ensemble from the same year that Dung made his journey to Australia, presented via slides and projected by visual artist Phuong Ngo.

Featuring Dung Nguyen (Vietnamese strings), Minh Ha Patmore (Vietnamese percussion, voice), Peter Knight (trumpet, electronics), Vanessa Tomlinson (Percussion), Erik Griswold (prepared piano, toy piano, melodic) and Helen Svoboda (double bass, voice), this performance proposes a rich context for the cultural and musical practices highlighted in the work, their place in contemporary Australian culture, and their relationship to the Vietnamese diaspora experience.

NFTs and the Australian Art Orchestra

As part of 1988, and for the first time, the AAO is collaborating with the University of Melbourne, School of Computing and Information Systems, to offer audiences a collectable non-fungible token (NFT). To better understand the potential for NFTs, and the blockchain more generally, to support artists, 50 NFTs have been minted on the Algorand blockchain and will be offered for free to 50 curious audience members as part of a pre-sale ticket offer. On the day of the performance, audience members will receive an e-mail notification with details of how to view their NFT, which will consist of a one-off audiovisual piece not be available on any other platforms.
