Event Details
Goethe’s words: “Nature and Art, they seem to flee apart, but then, before you know it, ...” set us off on a journey through the visual, sonic and conceptual work of artist-composer Catherine Schieve – made spatial and resonant in the multiple corners of the 19th-century North Melbourne Meat Market. An accompanying procession of original choral pieces of the last half-century transports images and ideas extending from Goethe and Whitman to MallarmeĢ and the modern architect Louis Sullivan.
Warren Burt contributes his noted electronic composition in collaboration with Schieve’s improvising vocalists and instruments, as well as a newly-composed a cappella work for the Astra Choir created by him for this occasion.
Two series of paintings of Catherine Schieve trigger two forms of musical response. Interpretations: her ‘Earth and Lustre’ paintings as a source for sound-making; Experience of Marfa: an environment around the mysterious natural phenonemon of the desert lights in Marfa, TX, USA – and Schieve’s four large paintings which followed a chance encounter with these lights for several hours.
Performers: Catherine Schieve, Warren Burt, John McCaughey (conductor), the Astra Choir, the Astra Improvising Choir, Joan Pollock (conductor of the Improvising Choir)
Featured non-Australian music: Maurice Ravel (SOUPIR) Robert Carl (SULLIVANT SONGS) Will Ogdon (THREE STATEMENTS) Dan Dediu (HARMONIC LABYRINTH)
