Event Details

Described as having “one of Australia’s most consistently interesting musical minds”, Andrea Keller has been dedicated to performing and composing contemporary, improvised music since the release of her first album in 2000.  Keller was the first ever winner of the prestigious Freedman Fellowship for Jazz in 2001 and tonight’s concert is brought to Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival with the support of the Freedman Foundation.

Her critically acclaimed work Still Night is a song-cycle combining poetry with original music. Written by Andrea specifically for the individual voices in her ensemble, the music reflects the themes of death, grief and loss with sensitivity, engaging audiences in a conversation on these vital themes.

The text—that spans time and place—includes work by tenth-century Japanese poet Izumi Shikibu and contemporary Australian poet, dancer and filmmaker Richard James Allen, as well as more familiar writers such as Keats, Whitman, Yeats, Proust, e. e. Cummings and Dylan Thomas.

After hearing Still Night, Roger Mitchell wrote in Ausjazz Blog that the work was “totally absorbing … a journey to places that I needed to explore”.

It was a sentiment echoed by Jude Gun, Executive Producer of the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts Asia: “Studying the faces around the room … each member of the audience had clearly yielded in some way to Keller’s exquisite musical palette and selected passages of text.”

A band made up of Australian jazz maestros, including the incomparable Vince Jones, will join Andrea.

Bonniesongs

Sydney-based art-folk virtuoso Bonnie Stewart, aka Bonniesongs, performs ethereal music – her lilting vocals floating over gentle peaks of acoustic and electronic instruments.

“This is clever chamber folk with a playful edge that centres around Bonnie’s ethereal voice … Enchanting listening.” Paul Gough, Tonedeaf.

Music for lovers of atmospheric shifts in feeling and distinctively airy vocals.
