Event Details

The stories of war that are most often highlighted are those that happen on the battlefield. Aftermath focusses on the stories of those who returned to Australia, all those irreparably damaged who tried to pick up their ‘normal’ lives after the war.

Through an evocative soundscape, Aftermath creates an alternative space for the contemplation of war and loss, and the nature of collective memory. The performance installation uses live instrumental performance as well as multiple audio sources, including vintage turntables playing bespoke dub plates cut with field and archival recordings. Aftermath creates an unconventional concert setting to consider those who survived the war, but didn’t survive the peace. As a durational work, Aftermath can be entered and exited as you please.

Aftermath is one of a series of performances by the Australian Art Orchestra commemorating the centenary of Armistice Day and is created in collaboration with Monash University Museum of Art, along with Monash University Faculty of Arts, which commissioned the 100 Stories archive that inspired this work. These are intimate accounts of lives remembered in fine grain detail away from the thrust of battle given sonic expression in original collaborative work by three extraordinary Australian composers: Aviva Endean, Tilman Robinson and Australian Art Orchestra’s artistic director Peter Knight.

This event is supported by the Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Fund, the Australia Council for the Arts, Creative Victoria, City of Melbourne and Monash University Museum of Art | MUMA.
