THE other week audiences at the Sydney Symphony Orchestra's Meet the Music concert found themselves sitting in near-darkness listening to the first performance of Yarraghey, a nocturne for percussion and orchestra. The mood of concentration for this new work was remarkable, particularly since the nature of the music was profoundly meditative. Even the brigade of coughers was for once practically silent.

The composer of this music was Ross Edwards and the success of his new piece, I suspect, has been an important turning point for him. Throughout the 1970s his work became increasingly precise, sometimes austerely brooding ...
