Rita Williams discusses the twists and turns of modern music with
Australian composer Richard Meale.
When Richard Meale was about 30 he chucked out most of his early
compositions. He had just returned from a trip to the United
States and Europe, and was convinced that Australian music lagged
a long way behind. Like charity, he thought at the time, a
thorough revision begins at home.
The study tour had taken him, among other places, to Spain. On
his return home he expressed his admiration for the country's
arts in Las Alboradas (1963), named after the Spanish morning
love song, and Homage to GarcĂa Lorca (1964), which took its cue
from texts by the Spanish poet of the title. These works
