James Penberthy

Composer 1915 - 1999

His craggy features always reminded me of the archetypal Australian bushman. He had a character to match the image: direct, sometimes blunt, totally honest, with a healthy disrespect for phoney niceties and the guts and readiness to take on the Establishment if the cause was just. With his friends from student days - Don Banks and Keith Humble - Jim Penberthy, who has died at the age of 83, represented a crusading spirit that far transcended self-interest and is too often - alas! - missing from our present day ...
