Women have been told for centuries by men that they can't compose, but some are now refusing to believe it, Jeremy Eccles discovers.
ARECENT Tall Poppies CD is a perfect piece of womanly cooperation. Pianist Lisa Moore, raised in Canberra, initiated the project with composer Elena Kats-Chernin, the Russian-born/Australian adopted composer. Purple Black & Blues is the result, 12 "hard-hitting, seemingly spontaneous-style" piano solos (as one reviewer described it) produced just in time for the Aussie record label's 10th anniversary. Hurrah for the girls, you say. But tucked inside the sleeve notes is an intriguing list of the "composers the now New York-based Lisa Moore has collaborated with in her career".
