Anna Pimakhova : Associate Artist

Anna Pimakhova was born in 1965 in the Ukraine, where she began studying music at the age of five. After finishing at the Music High School for Gifted Children in Kiev she was admitted to the Kiev State Conservatorium, where in 1989 she completed her MA degree in Choral Conducting and Composition.

In November 1993 she migrated to Australia. During ]994-1996 she was employed as chorus master by the Sydney Philharmonia for The Creation by Haydn, Carmina Burana by Orff, Messiah by Handel, Requiem by Berlioz, Elijah by Mendelssohn and Requiem by Brahms. This year Anna acted as assistant conductor for the production of Rachmaninov's All Night Vigil, directed by Antony Walker. In April 1996 she conducted a concert by the Sydney Chamber Choir, earning high praise from audience and critics.

During 1996 Anna conducted programmes which included major works by M. Berezovsky, A. Boyd, J. Brahms, B. Britten, N. Routley, G. Sviridov and V. Tormis. In August 1996 she participated in the Conducting Masterclass of the Fourth World Symposium on Choral Music and received an invitation from Professor Frieder Bernius (Artistic Director of the Stuttgart Kammerchor and the Barockorchester Stuttgart) to further her professional development in Germany under his supervision.

In 1997 she has received the Australia Council Development Grant, the Alfred S. White Music Bequest Scholarship, and the 1997 Women and Arts Fellowship, which will allow her to travel to Europe to study with conductors in Birmingham and Stuttgart. She is currently enrolled in a PhD in composition at the University of Sydney.
