David Morgan was born in Ewell, Surrey, England on 18th May 1932. From the age of four he grew up in Sydney, attending Sydney Grammar School before beginning studies at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music in 1946. He studied with Dr Alex Burnard (harmony and composition) and Jiri Tancibudek (oboe) and was three times the recipient of the Sydney Gordon Vicars Composition Scholarship (1950, 1951, 1952). A further scholarship enabled him to continue his musical education in London, where he studied with Matyas Seiber (composition), Peter Newbury (cor anglais), Norman Del Mar (conducting) and Walter Goehr (conducting and compositional analysis). He obtained his ARCM in composition in 1957, and a B.Mus. (Dunelm) in 1970.

David Morgan's musical career has encompassed performing as cor anglais player in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, teaching woodwind instruments for the Inner London Education Authority, working as a Music Librarian for the British Council (London) and at the British Museum Library, and being composer/arranger to the music branch of the South Australian Education Department. David has conducted the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra, concert bands, choirs and other groups, and is currently Conductor and Musical Director of the Barossa Chamber Orchestra.

David Morgan was also a prolific composer. His Festival Overture, written at the age of 16, was performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra under Sir Eugene Goossens. His symphonies have been performed by orchestras including the Sydney Symphony, Adelaide Symphony and West Australian Symphony. His works have received international performances in the USA, UK, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Hong Kong and elsewhere.
