Judith Crispin is a composer, sound artist and musicologist. She studied composition with Larry Sitsky before moving to Paris in 2005 to pursue post–doctoral work with Emmanuel Nunes. She has also studied with Brenton Broadstock, David Worrall and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Currently Judith is coordinator of music at the School of Creative Arts, University of Southern Queensland where she also lectures in composition, musicology and orchestration.

In her composition, Judith explores a conception of music as a living organism. Her sound–world is characterised by the use of autopoietic formal structures to express abstract or esoteric philosophical ideas. Judith has won a number of prizes for composition including the Harold Allen Memorial Prize twice and the 2004 Nancy Van de Vate International Composition Prize for Opera, for her Leonardo: the Italian Faust. A number of her compositions, such as Mal’achim Adonai (2005) explore polymetric or microtonal ideas. Judith’s creative work includes a number of full length operas, chamber and solo pieces, sound sculpture, film scores – most recently Music for Canvas, for violin and percussion (2007 Cannes film festival, LA short film festival, Tropfest) and collaboration with visual artists, such as The Transformation of K'un–P'eng (2007) for clarinet, mixed percussion and an invented idiophone. Judith’s works have been performed in Australia, France, Germany, Greece, China and Italy, and broadcast in Serbia. She is published by Sikesdi Press in Canada.

In addition to her creative work, Judith has published a number of writings on music including her book, The Esoteric Musical Tradition of Ferruccio Busoni and its Reinvigoration in the Music of Larry Sitsky: The Operas Doktor Faust and The Golem. ( New York: The Edwin Mellen Press, 2007). She is the organiser of the International Conference of Messiaen Studies, which will take place in March 2008 at USQ, and is currently pursuing a research project to locate and preserve Busoni’s Duca reproducing piano rolls.
