McKay’s ingenuity in developing and presenting these projects is to be loudly applauded. Through the hour-long, essentially solo program, she was able to maintain the energy and interest of the audience and create a collegial atmosphere for the consumption of new works. Although the linking between the title of the concert (presumably taken from the Robert Wilson book of the same name), the musical works presented and the diabolical subjects of the concurrent exhibition, was too subtle for this reviewer’s comprehension, it did not deter from the effectiveness of the event.

In this concert, the Australian premiere of Brett Dean’s Polysomnography was embedded within the heftiest possible cushioning – namely, three works of French late-romanticism. The evening opened with four songs from Fauré’s La Bonne Chanson (arranged by Paul Dean). Beautifully introduced and sung by soprano Margaret Schindler – attired in a stunning red toga – the songs did indeed present a type of tonal ambiguity which could be considered reasonably 'modern for Fauré, yet they were lushly offered within a swathe of velvety waves of piano arpeggiation...

Both Bonetti’s Requiem Lux Aeterna and Twist’s Old Prison were shown to be commendable works upon their world premiere at the Q150 Celebration Concert, providing an encouraging outlook for Queensland’s compositional future.
