Influences, styles: Indigenous Australian Culture, Indigenous music

Eric Avery is a Ngiyampaa, Yuin, Bundjalung and Gumbaynggir artist. As part of his practice Eric plays the violin, dances and composes music. Working with his family's custodial songs he seeks to revive and continue on an age-old legacy - continuing the tradition of singing in his culture - utilising his talents to combine and create an experience of his peoples culture. Violinist and contemporary dancer Eric Avery's practice explores the relationship between First People's and non-First People's forms and narratives through the combination of dance and music.

Eric is a violinist and contemporary dancer drawing inspiration from the relationship between different types of music, singing his ancestors songs with violin, and arranging contemporary music and dance.

Eric is a performer with Marrugeku Dance Theatre, has performed with the Black Arm Band and, more recently, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Byron Bay Bluesfest, and has opened for Grammy Award winner Rhiannon Giddens. Recently Eric played violin with Yo-Yo Ma.

Eric's work (Dancing with Strangers - Marrugeku) explores stories of first contact/invasion, from his family, and also his own story of reconnecting with his language (Ngiyampaa).

Eric Avery was participant in the 2019 edition of the Ngarra-Burria - First Peoples Composers program.
