Workshop Opportunity for Emerging Composers

Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra's 2008 Composer Workshop

The Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO), a community orchestra based in Sydney’s north, is currently seeking expressions of interest for the opportunity to develop experience in orchestral composition. Under the mentorship of composer Paul Stanhope, three emerging composers will be selected to write a work for the KPO and will work with the orchestra in a series of three workshops.

‘No amount of score-studying, text-book reading and theorising can quite prepare a composer as well as the experience of rehearsal and performance by a real, live orchestra!’ exclaims Paul Stanhope. ‘The KPO provides a rare (and friendly!) opportunity for young and emerging composers to give life to their ideas in the craft of orchestral writing. With tertiary education bodies largely abandoning their role in providing composers such opportunities, the KPO composer workshop provides a valuable resource for the future of Australian music’.

With a policy of regularly programming Australian and contemporary works, the KPO aims to develop the experience of emerging composers in writing for orchestra, particularly community orchestras, and indeed to encourage composers to explore the creative potential of writing quality works for this medium.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 31 January, which is a little over two weeks away. Emerging composers are required to email Lewis Cornwell indicating their interest in participating in the workshop, along with a short C.V., a score sample of recent work, contact details and a brief description of the work they plan to write.
